Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank and urinalysis to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

EDUCATION BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science
• Minimum of twelve (12) months of hospital training through an accredited school ofMedical Technology
• Current national registration as MT-ASCP or MT-AMTREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSSupports hospital mission and strategic vision; manages hospital resources appropriately; complies with hospital policies and programs; maintains skill levels, licenses, and certifications; complies with all state and federal compliance and HIPAA requirements; keeps lines of communication open between self and other hospital personnel; competent with computer programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. May be asked to supervise and train other technologists, lab assistants and phlebotomists while supervisor is absent.
2. Works closely with other technologists, lab assistants and phlebotomists and has frequent contact with patients, their families, nurses, physicians and other employees.
3. Receives specimens for laboratory or obtains such body materials as urine, blood, pus, and tissue directly from the patient and performs both routine and advanced testingprocedures in the areas of assignment.
4. Cultivates, isolates and identifies pathogenic bacteria, parasites and other micro-organisms.
5. Performs blood tests for transfusions and studies morphology of blood. Groups andtypes blood and cross matches donors and recipients to ascertain compatibility.
6. May use and calibrate equipment designed to measure glandular and other bodilyactivity.
7. Accountable for accurate results and the proper use and documentation of qualitycontrol materials and standards.
8. Recognizes the interdependency of test and the conditions that affect test results anduses those judgments to affect accurate results.
9. Corrects own errors and uses and maintains a variety of complex instruments.
10. Must follow all biohazard procedures including proper dress, gloving, wearing goggles,sanitizing work areas daily, hand washing, etc.

11.Must resolve instrument or test problems before the next shift if possible. If not

possible, sufficient documentation must be in place for the next shift to continue

problem resolution.

12. Reports test results to authorized persons.
13. Inventories and request supplies and reagents.
14. Assists physicians with bone marrow preparations.
15. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
16. Must be willing to take call and cover other shifts as needed.
